Chapter IX

A Socialist Carnival

Sunday, February 23, 1964

At Santa Maria, a beach located about twelve miles from Havana, what was previously a club for millionaires is now more or less reserved for foreign technicians. In winter, Russians, Czechs, Poles, Hungarians come joyfully to take advantage of this tropical paradise where Americans used to vacation. But not the Cubans: as far as they’re concerned, it’s winter, and you don’t bathe. There are days when it’s really hot, but never mind, it’s winter, you don’t bathe. Fidel has a little house in Santa Maria where he sometimes spends Saturday or Sunday playing baseball in the local field and swimming. Last August, I witnessed one of those excursions: he played baseball under a relentless sun from nine to twelve, then we went to change in the house for an hour-long dip, surrounded by about fifty bathers with whom Fidel kept up a running conversation amidst ever more violent waves. When he came out of the water, he asked for the menu of the cafeteria on the beach, and when he got to the house, he asked someone to call the director to find out why there were no avocados.
